Who Will Follow Jesus?

Our modern times are plagued with a lack of commitment.  Marriage failures may be traced not so much to a lack of love as to a lack of commitment.  Product loyalty, commitment to organizations, contracts and even friends are all suffering from the aversion of our modern population to commit.

So, it is an appropriate step for Christians to revisit the realities of their own spiritual commitment.   Am I a fan or follower?  Is my commitment founded on an intellectual comprehension or upon relational intimacy?  Is Jesus one of many or my one and only?  Does my commitment level reveal my acting ability or demonstrate my authenticity?  Is my commitment tied to spiritual moments which hold the possibility of being self-focused, or to the Spirit’s movement as He leads me into a world of humility and submission?  Good questions.  Difficult questions.  However, they are questions worth asking and queries deserving honest answers.

This lesson concludes our sessions on the analysis of commitment.    We do so with yet another question:  Who Will Follow Jesus?

Luke’s gospel records the response of three would-be followers of Jesus.  We can witness within their spiritual choices various levels of commitment.  However, what they offer as commitment just doesn’t cut it with Jesus.  One can never J-walk with impulsive, inadequate or insincere levels of commitment.  Join us in some spiritual introspection and ask yourself, “am I following Jesus?”
