Ancient Israel’s Proclivity to Disobedience
In our reading through the minor prophets we have encountered yet again the continual disobedience of Israel. Their proclivity toward disobedience holds a certain level of intrigue to me. What was the nature of faithfulness that they found to be such a struggle?
I do not profess to have discovered any specific reason for their repeated disobedience. My curiosity, however, led me down a road of meditation and study that held a couple of observations.
One observation is the diversity in the commands of God. In this lesson I will identify some of those commands as being “static” in nature. These are truths which can be obeyed at a single point of one’s lifespan. However, other commands of God can be identified as “dynamic” commands. Obeying these truths is a continuous process. While beginning at a single point in time, the nature of these commands is to produce continued alteration and change within the obedient believer.
From that foundation, it appears that Israel’s struggle with obedience came in part from their satisfaction with obedience to “static” commands and neglect of “dynamic” ones. The lesson concludes with one principle which would have aided Israel in staying connected with the “dynamic” truths of God’s revelation.
