Jesus’ Last Tuesday…
Sunday, Jesus is honored as a king, enters the temple and returns to Bethany for the night. Monday, He curses a fig tree, cleanses the temple and returns to Bethany. Tuesday He and the disciples leave early for Jerusalem, pass the fig tree again – it is now withered, and enter a crowded temple. People have swarmed there not only for the Passover but because the word about Jesus is spreading and they want to hear what He has to say.
Jesus will not begin Tuesday by addressing the longing ears of the interested, rather He will begin by being quizzed by a concerned Jewish leadership. They will question His authority to “do such things” – obvious reference to the cleansing of the temple on Monday. What follows is an amazing example of the Master’s ability to teach and instruct.
The Jewish leaders, however, are not out to learn. So Jesus will use three pointed parables to illustrate the self-righteous nature of the Jewish hierarchy.
- The Parable of the Two Sons
- The Parable of the Tenants
- The Parable of the Wedding Feast
Each parable will provide yet another illustration of the corrupted hearts of the chief priests, elders, and teachers of the law. As the intensity of Jesus’ parables increases, so does the desire of this leadership to kill Him. Scripture repeatedly shows that they “knew the parable was about them.”
