Mystery – The Church as a Virgin
What single word would you use to describe the spiritual body with whom you worship? Healthy, ill, connected, disconnected, vibrant, faded, growing, shrinking, exciting, boring, traditional, progressive… are some possibilities. I suspect that anyone answering that question will not use the word “virginal.” Yet, that term is used as one of the symbols representing the nature of the church.
This lesson will look first to how that term is utilized within the Old Testament to identify Israel, God’s ancient church. This word picture is often used and often used within the context of illustrating the place from which Israel had fallen. We will also look at how Paul used this expression as a description of his emotional tie to the Corinthians as he labored to present them to Christ as a virgin.
