Mystery – The Church as a Virgin (2)
Last time we saw how God encouraged the spiritually defiled Israelites to return to Him so He could restore their virgin spiritual status. They were told to set up signs and guideposts that would warn and direct them to the spiritual highway leading to God. They were to return and ask themselves how long they wished to remain faithless. If they would come back God would create a “new thing” in that He would restore their spiritual hearts so that they could surround Him again.
This lesson begins by defining the term virgin in English, Hebrew and Greek. By doing so a clear picture is attained concerning the nature of spiritual virginity. In 2Corinthians Paul actually modifies the word virgin with the word “pure.” We then briefly examine six “types of purity” within Scripture as shared by John McArthur.
The study ends by looking at Psalms 51 and discovering seven “D’s” of purity within this psalm of David:
- The pure function from a DESIRE to be pure
- The pure stay DEVOTED to the One who is pure
- The pure are DETERMINED to rediscover purity
- The pure are DEDICATED to being a witness
- The pure long for DELIVERANCE from sinful activities
- The pure are intent on DECLARING praises to God
- The pure realize their hearts are DAMAGED
