Mystery – The Church in the Feminine (Intro)
Before strolling down the “feminine” corridor of the art gallery containing portraits of the church, we lay a significant foundation. We examine a worthy question: Why did God select feminine symbols to reveal the nature of the church?
We will offer two suggestions. First, that when beginning the world God created male and female in “his image.” Both genders share distinct attributes of the image of God. So when outlining the nature of the body who are His family both male and female qualities are born within His image. This being true, one can quite literally consider the oneness of marriage as presenting humanity with the most complete and perfected picture of God. No wonder Satan is so intent in his efforts to distort, destroy and redefine marriage. By doing so he also corrupts a powerful symbol of the nature of God and the church.
Secondly, God Himself bears some strongly feminine characteristics. Although Scripture, by inspiration overwhelmingly uses male titles and pronouns to reference God, there are times when God speaks of His feminine attributes. The truth is God is not female and God is not male. He is Spirit (Jn. 4:24). Male and female terminology is only used to offer humans some insights into His nature.
