Face of Grace (part two)
This lesson continues the task of attempting to paint an accurate face of God’s grace. Our distortions of what God’s grace does or does not do, become problematic and easily corrupt our view of God’s graciousness. We discussed this last week and identified it as the Problem.
Our study will continue to offer some conjectures concerning the “thorn” in the flesh with which Paul may have wrestled. For what was Paul Pleading to be relieved? Last week we offered a couple of possibilities concerning Paul’s thorn: 1) a tempting FACINATION or 2) FOES, those persecutors of Paul who were doing their best to challenge is authority and apostleship
- Could Paul have been longing to alter his FEROCITY? What was Paul’s nature. What kind of person was he. Were there reasons that he would have thought it spiritually advantageous to have undergone a change of his personal nature?
- Paul’s thorn may have been purely of the FLESH. The usual suggestion is that Paul had some issues with his eyesight.
- Lastly, could Paul’s thorn have been related to FEAR? Was he wanting God to remove some phobia that he saw as a great hindrance to his message and method?
We end the study by looking at the Principles which Paul received from God in regard to his problem and pleas for removal of his thorn.
