Affirmation of Spiritual Commitment: Measured by Trial

What do you find to be the most significant battle in human history?  While many possible answers are feasible there is one that stands out above all others.  It is the battle in the wilderness of Judea when Satan sought victory over Jesus.

This lesson begins our exploration of significant factors about the encounter between the devil and the Son of Man:

• Who were the PLAYERS in the incident?  Obviously Jesus and the devil.  But Scripture adds a couple more…
• What was the PLACE like where this took place?  Desolate, dangerous and deserted are some terms that would apply…
• This measurement of the Master took place in a specific PERIOD of time as well.  It was a planned, predictable, and prolonged period…
• There were also PURPOSES to the wilderness testing.  One was diabolical the other divine…

We end by trying to draw some J-walking truths learned from Jesus’ journey into Judea.  Our trials also…

• Usually involve multiple PLAYERS.  Some supportive others corrosive.
• Often take place in very vulnerable PLACES.  Isolation creates an environment which can be filled with great victories or horrendous defeats.
• Are also easily tied to specific PERIODS of time – with greater possibilities existing after blessing and before service.
• And our trials also are not without PURPOSE.  James says it is by trial that we become “complete” and “lack nothing.”
