Lamp Truths
The story of Aladdin’s lamp traces its origin back to a Frenchman who recorded it in his diary while listening to an Arab spin the tale. Since that time playwrights have put it on stage, authors have embellished it, film producers have animated it, and it has been a common theme in multiple cartoons. It has even become the story behind a popular video game. But one thread weaving its way into them all is the appearance of a genie who grants one’s most extravagant wishes.
This story captures our imaginations but is unable to penetrate our realities. Oh, we at times would love a genie granting us our every desire, but alas it only works for Aladdin. But don’t loose heart, there is a lamp which does far more. It lights one’s life walk in such a way as to provide more than we “can imagine” (Eph. 3:20).
This lesson outlines three “Lamp truths” which hold the potential to give life more purpose than any imaginary power of a wish-granting-genie. Using a text from James we discover enlightening lamp truths about – Listening, Loving, and Living the Words of life.
