Barnacles on the Nave

One of the most destructive sea dwelling creatures is the barnacle.  They are detrimental to so many ocean surfaces.  The Navy estimates that barnacles cost them an additional $250 million dollars in fuel costs every year.  Boat owners find the creatures a constant contention calling for continual cleaning and repelling efforts.

They barnacle serves as a good illustration for how negativity is costly on the “Nave” (boat) of the church.  Spiritual barnacles hinder the churches ability to navigate smoothly and even interrupt the effectiveness of evangelism.

In this lesson we look at some biological truths regarding barnacles and draw spiritual applications to the first barnacles working their damage on the early church.
