Jesus’ Final Friday – Defeated Disciples
Jesus had been tested by the trial of sorrow. He is tried by the crowd whose mindset illustrates secular perceptions and spiritual corruptions. He has been kissed by a phony friend feigning affection and betrayed into the hands of godless men. In this lesson we will find Jesus enduring the struggle of defeated disciples.
The confusing events of those last few days had left the disciples with multiple uncertainties. Their confusion translates into a defeated inner spirit. While despair had gripped their hearts it becomes evident within their actions.
First, they demonstrate a willingness to fight. Such is often the case when defeatism negates God’s ability to use believers. Disappointments and despair create an inner turmoil which primes one for aggression. The pain of defeat tends to drive the sufferer toward a battlefield. There is a emotionally-charged search for some area in which to claim victory.
Secondly, the defeated disciples turn into track stars – they run. They flee searching for solace somewhere, anywhere other than around the Savior. Obviously, they find none. It will not be until they reconnect with Jesus in a fear-filled room early Sunday morning that they discover afresh their peace and purpose.
The lesson concludes by making applications of how defeatism works within the modern believer as well.
