Jesus’ Last Tuesday (3)

Jesus’ activities on Tuesday will conclude with some remarks about the destruction of the temple.  The disciples will question Him about the timing and particulars of His “no stone left standing” comment.  This lesson looks at the amazing fulfillment of Jesus’ prophecy.  Although about forty years prior to the actual Roman attack on Jerusalem, Jesus’ comments are spot on.

However, Jesus does not stop with a prophecy concerning the judgment coming upon the spirituality corrupt city of Jerusalem.  He issues serious warning to those who wish to be His followers.  They need not think He only holds the Jews accountable.  They too, will encounter judge Jesus.  He uses two parables to illustrate that truth:  1) the parable of the ten virgins  and  2) the parable of the talents.  Both of these become graphic warnings to the followers of Christ.

First, those following Jesus as their spiritual groom, must be ready for His coming.   Spiritual readiness involves an eager anticipation that proves itself through love, obedience and service.  Those walking in wisdom make sure their lights are shinning and they are securing fuel to illuminate brightly until the groom comes.   The foolish have no “spiritual fire”  to show they belong to the wedding party.    Jesus shows how spiritually foolish it is to attempt to receive the benefits of the groom without the burning preparations of love, obedience and service.

Secondly,  Jesus places an investment (talent) in every individual follower.  This investment is personal rather than corporate and this judgment will come with the same certainty as Jesus’ destructive prophecy will be come upon Jerusalem.   Five talent people will be held responsible for using their five talents and one talent people, responsible for their one.  However, all hold an equal responsibility in using that for which the Master has made them responsible.  Jesus ends this discourse by outlining the judgment scene.  A scene in which He will divide sheep from goats.  Those whose spirituality mimes that of the hypocritical Jews will meet with eternal destruction.  Those who walk within the faithful and sincere spiritual connection will enter into the “joy of their Master.”
