Mystery – The Body of Jesus

Recently we have been discussing what the symbol of the church being the body of Christ should bring to our understanding of the nature of the church.  This lesson continues to look at the body of Christ, but not the church as the body…  the actual body of Jesus.

Jesus’ body came SURPRISINGLY!  Mary, Joseph, and a group of laboring shepherds testify to the surprising way Jesus body arrived into the earth experience.

Jesus’ body lived SINLESSLY!  This is especially amazing because the body in which Jesus dwelt is said to be that of “sinful flesh” (Rom. 8:3).  Jesus flesh was capable of sinning.  His sinless nature was not because He avoided the temptations that humanity undergoes.  He was tempted in all ways like we are (Heb. 2:17-18).   However, a trial or temptation never made it past His thought process.  He always interrupted the fleshly course of a desire turning into sin (Jam. 1:13).

Jesus’ body died SACRIFICIALLY!   No old age diseases for the body of Jesus.  No accidents causing death.  He did not die in battle.  His death was that of a holy substitutionary sacrifice made on the behalf of sinful humanity.

Jesus’ body was raised SOVEREIGNLY God raised Jesus body because it was impossible for death (Satan’s trump card) to hold it (Acts 2:24).   The fact of a bodily resurrection became the foundation of the sermons preached by the Apostles.  It was also the means God used to establish the authority of Jesus “over all things” (Eph. 1:22).
