Mystery – the Church as a Body (Ailment – Segregated Mindset)
We are looking at ailments which have the capability of keeping the church from being what the Lord designed it to be. This lesson explores the illness of a segregated mindset. There is grave danger when believers think they can follow Christ without locking in with other believers.
We hear much today about a “personal relationship with Jesus” or we hear people invited to experience a personal connection with the Christ. Could it be that we have begun to view our salvation so individually that we have missed the significance of the “body” imagery used in Scripture? While there are elements of salvation which are indeed private matters and formulated on individual personal commitment, elevating salvation into the realm of the “personal,” holds the potential to negate the Biblical concept of believers being a useful, meaningful, and necessary part in the body of the transformed. Such a segregated mindset produces weak Christians and marginal churches. In other words, it is an ailment which afflicts both the individual and the church as a whole.
In our examination of Romans 12:1-8 we will uncover just how concerned the Apostle Paul was about a mindset which elevates private individualism and minimizes spiritual community.
