Mystery – The Church as a Bride (2)

Our last study introduced two basic principles about marriage.  First, the beginnings.  The sharing of vows and public promises which every spouse fully intends to fulfill.  Secondly, we discussed the realities of marriage.    The truths that quickly interrupt those verbalized love-vows.   Simply put, we saw that all marriages begin with a litany of promises motivated by mutual love and adoration.  However,  the realities of day-to-day married life soon disorient those love-promises.   Thus, Paul’s reminder in Ephesians five that when wishing to build a supportive physical married relationship look at and compare Christ and the church.

This week we look to three factors regarding Jesus’ marriage to His bride, the church.

1)  Christ’s response to the Church

2) The Church’s response to Christ

3) The Mystery of this Relationship

Each of these are expounded upon within the context of Eph. 5:22-32.  It is here that Paul lays out some wonderful realities about the spiritual bride of Christ – His church.
