Mystery – The Church as Unleavened Bread (2)
Last time we considered the negative influence of the leavening attitudes of the world.
This lesson will look at another part of Jesus’ “unleavened portrait” of the church. There is another leavening that negatively influences the New Zion – Jesus’ church. It is the leaven of religious people. Specifically, Jesus will address the leaven of the Pharisees and Saducees. Both represent religious people whose view of spiritual things were in direct opposition to each other.
The conservatism of one group led them to develop “traditions” which they believed aided in obeying the commands of God. Jesus will show that their elevated legalism was a “leavening” which infected truthful service to Jehovah. The other group was known for their liberal view of spiritual truth. They felt free to pick and choose which commands of God were to be obeyed and which could be ignored.
Within the symbolism of “leaven” Jesus offers some powerful warnings to modern day disciples.
