The Persistence of Grace

This final lesson from Nehemiah will look at the human need for God’s persistent grace.

Nehemiah leaves Jerusalem to return to his service to the King of Babylon.  He has been governor in Jerusalem for twelve years, overseeing the reconstruction of the wall and the spiritual renewal of the people.  Things are back on track.  The people have an amazing spiritual focus and their joy in serving God rings through the countryside.

But something happens.  We don’t know the time-frame or why Nehemiah returns but he comes back to a very different Jerusalem.  The wall has stood firm but the people have not.  Evil has returned in some very destructive ways.  Jerusalem has lost sight of who their enemy was and neglected to fulfill their promises.

Nehemiah is returning to a people who have forgotten how to live within the grace experience.  They stand in need of the persistent nature of God’s grace!  So, Nehemiah confronts and seeks to correct their sin.

As the book ends, we will be amazed again at the qualities of grace demonstrated in the person of Nehemiah.  The qualities of his leadership are often studied and emulated.  However, it is his comprehension of and willingness to live within God’s grace that build the leadership skills we so admire.  This book truly provides some unique teachings on living within the experiences of God’s grace!
