Jesus Walked the Path of Mercy

John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus.  His message proclaimed that Jesus would come in great “power” and with “fire” to burn off the chaff of religious hypocrisy.  John, like the rest of the disciples saw the coming Messiah as a destructive conqueror as He went about the task of restoring Israel to its former glory.

But while locked away in Herod’s dungeon, John began to doubt.  The rumors he was hearing about Jesus did not fit into his public proclamations or his preconceived ideas.  So confused was John, that he sends two of his disciples on a fact finding journey.  They confront Jesus with John’s concerns, “are you the one, or is there another?”

Jesus’ response shows that His intention was to preach a message of mercy not a message of judgment.  John needed to understand that truth and make sure he didn’t stumble over a Jesus of compassion.

This lesson examines how a message of mercy, even while unexpected by others, was the plan and practice of Jesus.  J-walkers should make every effort to keep in stride with the compassionate steps of their Savior.
