Jesus Walked in Emotional Misfortune
REJECTION! Just reading that word stirs something within. Psychologist deal with those suffering from social rejection. Physicians fear transplant rejection and an NBA player hates it when his perfect shot is rejected by a successful block. Rejection is an emotional word which quickly brings turmoil into the heart of anyone pondering its meaning.
What forms of rejection have you experienced? What is your most painful rejection experience? What is your youngest memory of feeling rejected?
As we fix our gaze upon the footsteps of Jesus we find that His path contains elements of Emotional Misfortune. More specifically, Jesus walked in the emotional misfortune of rejection.
This study will see how Jesus experienced rejection on many levels. They include:
- Rejection from FAMILY
- Rejection from FRIENDS
- Rejection from FOLLOWERS
- Rejection from FOES
The lifetime of Jesus was one plagued with rejection on multiple levels. Yet, in a very real way much of that rejection was connected to the “plan” which was being fulfilled in his life journey. So, perhaps some of that rejection came with a level of expectation and preparation.
There is, however, a rejection that may offer greater emotional pain to Jesus. What of those who reject Him today! A risen Jesus seated at the right hand of God, whose existence is tied to making intersession and being the propitiation for all humanity. A suffering servant who made it through the emotional misfortune of the “plan” but now has to face in “real-time” the rejection of those who know, or at least can know and be obedient to that plan.
Could it be that you might be adding to the Savior’s sense of rejection? Think you are a pretty good person who does not need a Savior? Do the possibilities of social persecutions cause you to reject Jesus for fear of loosing the acceptance of others? Does Jesus make your rejection list simply because you find it more enjoyable to have no imposed restraints and the freedom to do whatever you wish whenever you wish? Or like the ancient audience of Stephan in Acts 10 you could just hold a heart and ears that are resisting the call and influence of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus experienced unprecedented rejection during His lifetime. But the real question is are you contributing to His excruciating sense of rejection today?
