Jesus Final Measurement – Victory Over the Third Temptaion

This lesson examines how Jesus responds to the third wilderness temptation of Satan.

He begins by demanding a SEPARATION.  He is fed up and literally “leads” Satan “under” Him.  Although separation takes place the text reveals that it is only for a season – Satan will be back!  He looks for another “opportune time.”  So, it is when we gain a separation from a period of trial – another opportunity will come.  Satan will look for another occasion.  We must be careful that our attitudes, actions and neglects do not create opportunities which encourage Satan’s return.

Once again Jesus uses SCRIPTURE to defeat the evil one.  Jesus’ use of Scripture shows an understanding of Satan’s deceive attempt to disassociating worship from service.  Satan had inaccurately invited Jesus to worship him and receive the kingdoms of the world, when in reality Jesus’ worship of Satan would make Him a servant of Satan.

Jesus also receives SOLACE as He deals with the final trial of the devil.   His Father sends angels to attend to His needs and uplift His spirit.

Finally, we see that it was within the trial experience that Jesus gained STRENGTH.   He is transformed from one who was “full of the Holy Spirit” (Lk. 4:1), into one who returns to Galilee “in the power of the Holy Spirit” (Lk. 4:14).  What produced the change?  Why the difference?  The answer must be found in the fact that Jesus experienced grown through the actual trial process.
