Analysis of Commitment: One of Many or One and Only
Thus far our commitment study has shared two contrasting realities which aid in evaluating the level of one’s spiritual commitment. First, am I a “Fan” or a “Follower?” Second, am I looking for an “Intellectual Reunion” or and “Intimate Relationship?” The lesson today offers a third: Is Jesus “One of Many or the One and Only?”
This study begins with a look at Jesus’ statement in Luke 14:25-26. It is here that He says that those who come to Him must “hate” their father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, and even their own life. Understanding commitment demands that we know the meaning of Jesus’ words. So, we start by expounding upon that text.
Once one understands what Jesus is saying, it then becomes the objective of this lesson to ask if He is your “one and only” or just “one of many.” To help in determining which of those are more accurate for each individual we ask four questions…
1) For what do you sacrifice your time, energy, and money?
2) When you hurt, where do you go for comfort?
3) What disappoints or frustrates you?
4) What excites you?
By answering these questions, one comes face-to-face with the realities of their level of spiritual commitment. Are you ready to take a serious look at where your heart stands with Jesus? To see exactly what place Jesus holds in your heart? This lesson will help you determine if He is your one and only or just number one of many.
