Analyzing Commitment

We began our look at spiritual commitment by examining how its anatomy is made up of a belief in what God has CONSIGNED to us, a CONFIDENCE in what He will do with us, and the CONFORMITY by us to be obedient to His directives.

This lesson is the first in several, which will analyze some specifics concerning the nature of spiritual commitment.

We begin with a series of questions:

  • Are you a Christian?
  • How did you become a Christian?
  • What is a Christian?

The answers, especially to this last question,  reveal the standard by which one evaluates their spiritual commitment.  If, for example,  one defines a Christian only by the depth of love they have for others, then that becomes the standard by which they evaluate their own spiritual commitment.  If one believes a Christian is one who reads the Bible, attends church services, gives generously, and takes communion,  then their commitment is measured by how successful they read the Bible and how often they are present at the church building, the amount of their giving and how faithfully they partake of communion.  Thus, the definition of being a Christian becomes foundational to how believers calculate the success of their spiritual commitment.

The sad truth is that very few believers function with an adequate understanding of what it means to be a Christian.  This translates into the fact that few can accurately examine their own commitment to Jesus.  This lesson attempts to establish an accurate understanding of what it means to be a Christian.  It is only within the proper definition that anyone can accurately assess the level of their spiritual commitment.  Are you ready for the challenge?  Are you ready to get serious about your own commitment to the Christ?
