On The Edge of Greatness…

Numbers chapter thirteen records God’s instruction to Moses for sending spies into the land of the Canaanites.  God’s intention was to impress the people with the wonders of the land He was ready to give them.  They found fortified cities and  flourishing crops.  They were awestruck, calling it a land that “flowed with milk and honey.”  This in the only point which enjoyed unanimous support within the spy corp.  Canaan was a amazing place!

They had also seen some strong and impressive people.  While the land amazed them, the giants scared them to death  –  more accurately mutated them into mental and spiritual “grasshoppers.”  So, ten of the twelve spies successfully spread their fears among the people of Israel.  The voices, reason, and faith of Joshua and Caleb get buried in the exaggerated negativity of the anxious majority.

Here, on the edge of greatness, the people go faithless. This lesson looks at:

  • the importance of seeing the opportunities which God makes available
  • the importance of  “crossing over” into the place of Providential promises
  • the painful example of the consequences faced when people grow complacent, fearful, and unmovable while standing on the edge of greatness.
